If you are pulled in every direction, it’s inevitable something will break…

Well lets hope not. I’m currently finishing off edition 2 of Shine for the upcoming V&A Power of Making exhibition to be shown early September. I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with this piece. The first incarnation of Shine was created during my final year at the RCA as an experiment into the evolution of the eye, questioning if what we see is actually what exists. After the exhibition the piece toured Europe and then went to Washington, then it all went quiet. Roughly 5 years lately the work has taking something of a second coming. The first edition was shown exactly 1 year ago at LabCraft and subsequently has been acquired by the Craft Council of England for their permanent collection. So why do I have such a hostile relationship with this piece? I’m unsure if there is a definitive answer, I work very closer with Shine with only out-sourcing the minimum of processes but I am a maker primarily so these challenges into the unknown are what drive me. Perhaps it is because I first envisioned the piece almost 6 years ago and only now it is coming of age. I do admit, I only now can appreciate the language of Shine and how patrons have connected/engaged with it.

Shine will be on show at the V&A Power of Making exhibition from September 6th till 2nd Jan 2012.

I’ve finally moved into my new studio that feels so good as it has allowed me to work on multiple projects at the same time. Granted the photo still looks like I work in chaos however it works for me. If you look very closer, you might see some pieces of new work that will be exhibited in 2012.

Currently I am showing work at MoMA New York as part of the new Talk to Me exhibition. This show has been getting 5 star reviews and I very egar to get over there to see how the work is being both presented and received. Their website is once again is an artwork in itself with the focus this time on the communication of design rather than the connectivity. They have also embraced twitter for the duration of the exhibition and have encouraged patrons to MoMA # tag exhibits they have found exciting and intriguing. Crossfire@MoMA is #ttmcrossfire from which I have been receiving very positive feedback so thank-you to everyone.

Finally I’ve posted images of an article that was written about my pratice in the August issue of Homes & Interiors Scotland. It was a great experience and I can only apologise for the slightly chaotic start to the interview.
